History
Grace House was founded in 1976 by Pat Stokes, who had a vision of a safe place, a home for alcoholic women to get sober with the support of other women suffering from the same disease. Few such places existed, especially if a woman lacked financial resources. Grace House never turns a woman away because of the inability to pay for treatment. Approximately 99% of the women that we treated this past year are indigent and over 65% reported being homeless or do not have a safe place to return home to following treatment. Most women come to us broken and hopeless, -materially, physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually bankrupt. Offering them help without the added stress of figuring out how to pay, when they already can’t take care of themselves, allows them to focus on what can help them to begin healing and start the journey of recovery. Grace House provides a full continuum of gender specific, long term residential and outpatient treatment services to women whose lives have been negatively impacted by alcohol and/or illicit drug use, and women who may additionally have a co‐occurring mental or behavioral health disorder. Currently, over 5,600 women have been served. Grace House is licensed and by the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, has maintained CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) accredited since 2003.
